INYELANE-THE MUSICAL IS ON THE CARDS!!

Iyasa is yet again involved in an exciting collaboration.

Two of Southern Africa’s rising young talent in musical theater production Sabelo Ngema and Thembi Ngwabi have come together to work on Inyelane a musical on the impact of Cecil John Rhodes’s arrival of the Pioneer Colum in this country. The play is written by Cont Mhlanga. Sabelo Ngema is composing and directing the music, Thembi Ngwabi is directing the musical and the dance choreography is by both of them. Cont Mhlanga is producing.

The first four weeks of rehearsals came to an end on the 29th of February at Amakhosi Cultural Center. This will be followed by a performance of the work in progress on the second of March at 6:30pm at the Cultural center. Admission to the interested public is free at this Braai Dinner Performance. Audiences need to come ready to dine while they enjoy the presentation. The second four weeks of the rehearsals have been penciled for May where the ten selected artists from the graduates of the Mbongeni Ngema Academy in Durban South Africa will join the second rehearsal camp in Bulawayo.

Sabelo Ngema is the son of the legendary music theater genius Mbongeni Ngema and is leader of his own band Afrosoul who have two albums, UmAfrica and Usemncane. Their third album will be released in April 2012. Music and theater are his passion and he has starred in the following productions; Woza My Fohloza, 2002; Stimela Sase Zola 2003; The Zulu 2004; Sarafina  1993-94 and 2004-05; The Living Legend 2008; Lion of the East 2009; 2010 And Beyond for the soccer world cup. His specialties are in composing, choreography and teaching. Afro-soul has won two awards; Metro FM Award 2008 (Best Afro-pop) SATMA Award 2010 (Best Afro-Soul) SAMA Award Nominee (Best Afro-pop) 2009. He has toured widely internationally.

Thembi Ngwabi is a prolific theater and film actress, dancer, bass guitarist and musician with one album Zhopembe to her credit and has toured the world. She is working on her second album for release in 2013.This globally travelled traditionalist artist’s specialty is teaching, acting, composing, dance and playing instruments. She is directing a musical for the first time. Thembi popularly known as UGogo to her fans and students has starred in the following award winning Amakhosi and Rooftop productions; Nansi Le Ndoda 1989; Hoyaya Ho! 1990; Mdawini 1990; Stisha 1991; Victims And Witnesses 1991; Jazzman 1992; Iluba Lo Thando 1993; The African Struggle 1993; Makanya 1993-96; Lamhla Layizolo 1994; The Members 1994; Sigxobunyawo 1995; Somkhence 1996; Yebo Africa 1997; Brooms 1999; Keep In Touch 2001; Two Cheers For A Patriot 2003; Screams and Tears 2004; Pregnant With Emotions 2005; Mbulu Makhasane 2005; Lysistrata 2005; The Chosen One 2006; The Good President 2007.

Sabelo Ngema and Thembi Ngwabi will be holding joint events to launch their albums in Durban, Harare and Bulawayo between their collaborative working schedules on the production of Inyelane. Currently Sabelo is at Amakhosi Cultural Center.

Thembi is a graduate of the Amakhosi Arts Academy and is currently the head of training at the same institution. After stopping to play with the once popular all female band Amakhosikazi she formed her own band Abakagogo; while Sabelo is a graduate of the Mbongeni Ngema Academy. He is currently the Entertainment Manager at Moyo uShaka in Durban. With prolific music producer Sergeant Malishe he co-founded Ikabawo Entertainment.

Inyelane will be rehearsed during 2012 at Amakhosi Cultural Center in Bulawayo over 16 Weeks. It will employ 37 artists and production crew from the three arts Academies of Amakhosi, Iyasa and Ngema. This partnership is in line with the Bulawayo-Durban twinning arrangement to foster cooperation and trade between the two cities that share the same culture and similar history. Amakhosi and Ngema Academies are forging links to develop performance arts talent and jointly tell the many untold African stories of the continent’s legendary heroes.

It is on that note that as Iyasa we feel the involvement of our artistes/students in the project is a huge honour!
